This project comprising of a primary and a
secondary school located on a site of 15-acres is part of the residential
development for the staff of Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex
for the Malaysia - Singapore Second Crossing project in Gelang Patah, Johor
Darul Takzim.
The turnkey contractor, Prolink Development
Sdn Bhd and the education authority requested PAB to explore new design concepts
to “de-institutionalise” schools and make them more user-friendly, in keeping
with recent trends in the development of new schools in the country.
The various functional components are
organised around courtyards and verandas which separate different activities but
yet aesthetically integrated into a common architectural theme that responds to
the climate and functions. The integration of open landscaped spaces with the
buildings is a major design consideration in the planning. Also common amenities
such as game courts and playing fields are shared and are used as a physical
separation between the two schools, a necessity required by the school
authority. The building forms and colours also blend in with the CIQ residential
community as part the common “Tropical Resort” theme adopted by the client.
The schools comprise of 30 primary
classroom modules and 36 secondary classroom modules were completed in 1998 at a
cost of RM 20 million.
